Glutathione As Anti Oxidants

The Latest Health Extracts From The World Of Research Via The Web

The presence of glutathione is required to maintain the normal function of the immune system. It is known to play a critical role in the multiplication of lymphocytes (the cells that mediate specific immunity) which occurs in the development of an effective immune response. 5

Zinc As Anti Oxidant

The Latest Health Extracts From The World Of Research Via The Web

The role of antioxidant supplements in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has received a great deal of interest. Antioxidants are found naturally in food and include vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), carotenoids, selenium, and zinc. Antioxidants neutralize the damage to cells caused by free radicals and may be relevant to AMD if oxidative damage to the retina leads to AMD. 20

Vitamin E As Anti Oxidant

The Latest Health Extracts From The World Of Research Via The Web

Epidemiological studies have reported an inverse relationship between vitamin E status and coronary heart disease. This relationship has not, however, been confirmed by the majority of intervention studies, which have been carried out relatively late in the disease process. The protective effects of vitamin E may be more important earlier in life, before vascular changes have become established. This study investigated whether dietary vitamin E could prevent preclinical arterial changes in young adults relevant to the development of cardiovascular disease. 19

Selenium As Anti Oxidant

Current Health Extracts From The World Of Research Via The Web

ITHACA, N.Y. — A study by researchers at Cornell University suggests that higher-than-normal amounts of a selenium-containing enzyme could promote type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that mice with elevated levels of the antioxidant enzyme develop the precursors of diabetes at much higher rates than did control mice. 5

Vitamin C As Anti Oxidant

Vitamin C is one of the most commonly used supplements, often associated with the common cold. However, the benefits of Vitamin C reach far beyond its connection with the common cold. It prevents oxygen and free radicals from damaging body tissue. Vitamin C is necessary for the production of proteins, collagen and elastin, which strengthen arteries, bones, teeth, cartilage, and other tissues. It helps the body absorb iron, helps lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol, and reduces the effects of some allergy-producing substances. Taking Vitamin C in conjunction with other supplements, such as MSM, further enhances its benefits. 6

Vitamin B6 As Antioxidant

Pyridoxal phosphate concentrations of plasma and liver indicated that an initial deficiency state was reached. Vitamin B6 deficiency led to peroxidative stress: TBARS production was higher in the liver (+18.6%) and even more in the heart (+61%) of deficient rats as compared with controls. Furthermore, significant stimulation of glutathione-dependent enzymes occurred in both heart and liver of deficient rats: glutathione peroxidase activity increased in heart (+144%) and liver (+505%); glutathione reductase increased in heart (+54.9%) and liver (+15.5%). No difference in the total glutathione content of the organs of the two groups was observed. The reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio was significantly lower in deficient rats. Although the activity of glutathione-dependent enzymes was significantly greater in deficient rats than in controls, this stimulation was only partially able to counteract the peroxidative damage due to vitamin B6 deficiency. 13

Beta-carotene as Anti Oxidant

Beta-carotene belongs to a group of pigments called carotenoids. Carotenoids are responsible for giving certain fruits and vegetables an orange, yellow or red color. Beta-carotene is a provitamin, a carotenoid, which means that it is easily converted to vitamin A or retinol by the human body. Beta-carotene converts itself to vitamin A in the intestines and is stored in the liver until needed by the body. 36

Anti Oxidants

Anti-oxidants have recently become a buzzword in nutrition and cancer circles. There are a lot of news stories and nutritional supplement advertisements touting anti-oxidants as "magic bullets" that will prevent the occurrence and/or spread of oral and other kinds of cancer. In truth, of course, there is no "magic bullet" to prevent cancer — but there IS a growing body of research that shows that anti-oxidants actually provide a kind of defense against this disease. To understand how, it is important to first examine another set of compounds known as free radicals. 2
